According to the European version of "Automotive News" reported on March 16, Renault and Nissan will further deepen cooperation and plan to establish a light commercial vehicle joint venture aimed at cutting costs, sharing technology and increasing sales.
The newly formed joint venture will be led by Ashwani Gupta, head of the Renault Light Commercial Vehicles division. Both Renault and Nissan will maintain their independent identity, sales and revenue. Last year, Mitsubishi Motors, a new member of Nissan Holdings to join the alliance, will also participate in the cooperation.
Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn said in a statement that "Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi jointly established a joint venture to help increase their sales and create huge synergies." In February, Ghosn stepped down as CEO of Nissan. He expressed his desire to invest more time and energy in the strategic and operational reforms and expansion of the alliance.
The alliance said that the three companies' sales of young commercial vehicles in 2015 totaled 1.5 million. Among them, Nissan's sales volume was 815,490 units, Renault included subsidiary Volga sales of 443,931, and Mitsubishi Motors sold 248,000 units.
Mitsubishi and Nissan also said this month that they are studying the possibility of joint production of pickup trucks in the Southeast Asian market.
