Manitowoc's new crawler crane overload testing completed

Manitowoc recently completed the overload test of its 31000 model new crawler crane as required. During the test, it lifted a test weight of 2,500 metric tons. The rated lifting capacity of this type of crane is 2,300 metric tons. For Manitowoc, all new model cranes must verify the crane's actual lifting capacity through an overload test.
Larry Weyers, vice president of Manitowoc North America, stated that the test results were as perfect as expected, and that the engine was working properly under overload conditions. He said, "The lifting process went smoothly and the 31000 performance was perfect."
During the entire test period, a total of 600 strain gauges were installed on the tested 31000 to measure the tension and compression of crane steel structures.
Kevin Blaney, product marketing manager for Manitowoc's crawler cranes, said that the test data will be analyzed to determine if 31,000 needs to be modified. He said, "We will examine the range of structural stress changes and then make further downward or upward adjustments to ensure that the actual received stress values of the components are within design limits."
The 31000's main boom can be up to 180 to 344 feet in length. A variety of jibs and tower arms are also available.
