A new "snakebot" surgical instrument has been invented that can enter the patient's throat without making a cut. Designers hope it can quickly become commonplace. The system, called Flex, was designed by Howie Choset, a robotics professor from Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Produced by the British company Medrobotics Group.
Through the Flex system, doctors can more easily access and treat patients with challenging areas. The device now works mainly in the area between the oropharynx (your mouth, your throat) and on the top of the throat.
