A few days ago, according to Reuters news, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that in the next two years, Honda plans to double the number of models it sells in China to compete for more market share from competitors such as General Motors.
According to the report, Honda hopes to expand its product range to around 20 by sharing platforms and other major components with two Chinese joint ventures. Therefore, Honda plans to purchase more Chinese parts to keep its production cost low.
China has the largest car market in the world. Due to economic stimulus policies and high demand in inland areas, the Chinese market is expected to continue its double-digit growth this year. It is precisely because of the continued rapid growth of the Chinese market that it has attracted major manufacturers to seek development in China and continuously adjust their development strategies in order to increase their market share in China.
In contrast, General Motors sold 40 models in China, and its total sales in 2013 were four times that of Honda. To narrow the gap with its competitors, Honda needs to continue its efforts.
However, the Japanese economic news did not specify the source of the information in the report, and the Honda spokesperson did not comment on the matter.
