On March 16, Yang Chuantang was appointed as the new Minister of Transportation of China. In an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency reporters, he said that the Ministry of Transport will focus on concentrating contiguous destitute areas, and give priority to the development of urban public transport in order to alleviate the problem of traffic congestion in big cities.

Yang Chuantang said that the Ministry of Transport has compiled and implemented a poverty alleviation plan for transportation. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the vehicle purchase tax for traffic construction in contiguous contiguous areas will exceed RMB 510 billion, accounting for 50% of the total purchase tax for the “Twelfth Five-Year” highway construction vehicles. We will focus on the forces of the entire industry and fight for a tough battle, and strive to achieve a well-to-do society, the transport development of the area is close to or reach the national average.

Regarding how to ease the traffic jams in big cities, Yang Chuantang stated that traffic congestion in big cities is a worldwide problem. Experiences from countries around the world have shown that prioritizing the development of public transport is one of the most effective ways to ease urban traffic congestion.

He said that the State Council executive meeting last year reviewed and adopted guidance on implementing the strategy for the development of urban public transport priority. The transportation department is cooperating with relevant departments to speed up the promotion of the "Urban Public Transport Regulations"; carry out the demonstration project of "transportation city" and promote the implementation of public transport development support policies in planning, capital, land, road rights, fiscal and taxation, and technology; Strengthen the standardization and intelligent construction of the urban public transport industry.
