Japan Develops Technology for Measuring Electromagnetic Wave Intensity for Accurate Local Measurements

[China Instrument Network Instrument R&D] The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute (Industrial Research Institute) announced on July 11, 2016 that it has developed a technique for measuring the electromagnetic wave intensity using the helium-atom resonance phenomenon. It is possible to achieve a smaller local measurement than the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave to be measured, which cannot be achieved using a common antenna. This technique can measure electromagnetic wave intensity with high spatial resolution.

When an atom receives a specific frequency electromagnetic wave, it repeatedly transitions between two energy states that resonate with the electromagnetic wave. This phenomenon is called "rabbi oscillation" and its frequency (rabbit frequency) is proportional to the intensity of the received electromagnetic wave. With this property, the intensity of the electromagnetic wave can be obtained by measuring the Rabbi frequency without using an antenna.

The production institute has sealed the helium gas in the glassware and sensed electromagnetic waves by detecting Rabbi oscillations of helium atoms. Rabbi frequency detection uses a laser, so no metal cables, optical fibers, etc. are required, and electromagnetic waves can be wirelessly measured from a distance. Partial measurements can be achieved by using small glassware. Experiments confirmed that electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 9.2 GHz can be measured with a spatial resolution of 1 cm.

The future research direction of ZJM is to appropriately select two energy states that resonate with the electromagnetic wave according to the abundant energy states in the rubidium atom, thereby greatly expanding the measurable electromagnetic wave frequency range, and further improving the measurement accuracy and spatial resolution. rate.

The technical details of this time were presented on the conference "Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements 2016 (CPEM2016)" held in Canada on July 13th.
