Scientists believe there is a lot of oil and gas resources at the bottom of Qaidam Salt Lake

The Qaidam Basin Environmental Science Drilling Project, which has gathered many domestic academicians, was drilled in the Dabson Salt Lake District of Golmud City, Qinghai Province. Scientists believe that there is a large amount of oil and gas resources at the bottom of the Qaidam Salt Lake, which is known as the "treasure bowl."
According to reports, the Qaidam Basin Environmental Science Drilling Project is sponsored by the China Geological Survey and co-sponsored by the Institute of Mineral Resources of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the China Petroleum Exploration and Development Institute, the Qinghai Salt Lake Group, and the Qinghai Oilfield Company. The exploratory well is known as the salt ginseng number 1, and the well depth is expected to be 1,200 meters. In the second phase of the project, drill Chaike No. 1 will be drilled and the well depth will reach 5,000 meters. The start of this project has attracted the attention of domestic scientists. Six academicians from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the China Seismological Bureau, the China Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute and other research institutes personally attended the ceremony to start the project in Golmud.
Dr. Liu Yuntian, manager of the exploration division of China Petroleum Qinghai Oilfield Company, said that there may be a large amount of oil and gas resources under the salt lake layer in the Qaidam Basin, and there may be two atmospheres of biogas and cracked gas. The biogenic gas layer exists more than 1,500 meters underground and the cracked gas layer is less than 4,500 meters. The development of oil and gas resources in the Salt Lake area will help facilitate the rapid development of the Qizamu Salt Lake, a natural gas chemical recycling industry chain.
Exploring oil and gas resources is not the only purpose of a drilling project. Zheng Mianping, chief scientist of the project and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that through this project, research results on plateau uplift, ancient monsoon succession, and hydrocarbon generation and mineralization effects can be obtained, forming an internationally competitive resource and environmental science and technology team. It is expected that our country will go to the forefront of the world in the research field of salt lake ancient environment.
It is understood that this project has opened up the history of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau for the purpose of resource and environmental science. It will study the uplift, paleoclimate, paleontology, and paleoenvironmental changes of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and reveal the origin and reserves of mineral resources in the Salt Lake region. The basis of basic science, at the same time, will also give the world’s scientific community a chance to study the latest global geosciences, climate change, and other scientific platforms.
