Graphite is a high-energy crystalline carbon material, because of its unique structure and conductivity, thermal conductivity, lubricity, high temperature, chemical stability and other characteristics, it has a high value in the high performance material, are widely used in metallurgy, mechanical In the fields of environmental protection, chemical industry, fire resistance, electronics, medicine, military industry and aerospace, it has become an indispensable non-metallic material for modern industry and the development of high, new and cutting-edge technologies. It is increasingly important in the development of the national economy. Industry experts predict that the 20th century is the century of silicon, and the 21st century will be the century of carbon.
China's natural graphite has good geological conditions, wide distribution, abundant resources and good quality. Its reserves and output rank first in the world and it is one of the dominant minerals in China.
Natural graphite can be classified into two types: crystalline graphite (scale) and cryptocrystalline graphite (earth) depending on the degree of crystallization. The characteristics of crystalline graphite ore are that the grade is not high, the fixed carbon content is generally not more than 10%, and the locally enriched area can reach 20% or more, but the graphite ore is of good selectivity and the flotation concentrate can reach the grade. More than 85% is one of the best floatable ore in nature. The quality of cryptocrystalline graphite is relatively high, and the fixed carbon content is generally 60% to 80%, up to 95%, but the ore is less selectable.
With the continuous development of technology, ordinary high-carbon graphite products can no longer meet the requirements of all walks of life, so it is necessary to further improve the purity of graphite. However, China's graphite processing technology is relatively low, and its products are mainly based on raw materials and primary products. The high impurity content of the products limits its application range.
In this way, on the one hand, domestic graphite products are cheap in the international market, resulting in a large outflow of graphite resources; on the other hand, high-purity ultra-fine graphite products required by the domestic market are more dependent on imports. Therefore, it is of practical significance to study the preparation process of high-purity graphite.
To study the method of purifying graphite, it is necessary to first find out the composition of impurities present in the graphite ore. Although the natural graphite in various places contains different impurity components, the approximate composition is similar. These impurities are mainly silicate minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium , calcium, aluminum, etc. The purification process of graphite is to take effective measures to remove this part of impurities. At present, the methods for purifying graphite at home and abroad mainly include flotation method, alkali acid method, hydrofluoric acid method, chlorination roasting method, high temperature method and the like. Among them, the alkali acid method, the hydrofluoric acid method and the chlorination roasting method belong to the chemical purification method, and the high temperature purification method belongs to the physical purification method.
1 The main method of graphite purification
1. 1 flotation method
Flotation method is a commonly used method for purifying minerals. Because graphite surface is not easily wetted by water, it has good floatability and is easy to separate from impurity minerals. In China, flotation method is basically used for graphite. Performing ore dressing .
The flotation of the graphite ore is generally carried out by using a positive flotation method, followed by reverse flotation of the positive flotation concentrate. A higher grade graphite concentrate can be obtained by flotation. Flotation graphite concentrate grades can usually reach 80% ~ 90%, using multi-stage grinding, the purity can reach 98%.
Conventional crystalline graphite flotation collector as kerosene, diesel oil, heavy oil, sulfonate, sulfate, phenols, and carboxylic acid ester, a foaming agent commonly used for the oil # 2, # 4 oil, pine oil, an ether Alcohol and butyl ether oil, etc., the regulators are lime and sodium carbonate, and the inhibitors are water glass and lime. The commonly used collector for flotation of cryptocrystalline graphite is coal tar. Commonly used foaming agents are eucalyptus oil and pine oil. The commonly used regulator is sodium carbonate. The commonly used inhibitors are water glass and sodium fluorosilicate.
The graphite concentrate purified by flotation method can only reach a certain range, because some impurities are impregnated into the graphite scales in a very fine granular form, and even if it is finely ground, it cannot completely dissociate, so it is difficult to completely remove it by physical beneficiation method. This part of the impurities is generally only used as the first step in the purification of graphite. The method of further purifying graphite is usually a chemical method or a high temperature method.
1. 2 alkaline acid method
The alkali acid method is the main method for chemical purification of graphite, and it is also a relatively mature process. The method includes a system such as NaOH-HCl, NaOH-H2SO4, NaOH-HC1-HNO3. Among them, the NaOH-HCl method is the most common.
The principle of purifying graphite by alkaline acid method is to uniformly homogenize NaOH and graphite in a certain ratio, and impurities such as silicate, aluminosilicate, quartz and the like in the graphite at a high temperature of 500-700 e and sodium hydroxide A chemical reaction occurs to form soluble sodium silicate or acid-soluble sodium aluminosilicate, which is then removed by washing with water to achieve the purpose of desiliconization; another part of impurities such as oxides of metals remain in the graphite after alkali fusion. The product after desiliconization is leached with an acid to convert the metal oxide therein into a soluble metal compound, and the impurities such as carbonate in the graphite and the acid-soluble compound formed during the alkali leaching react with the acid to enter the liquid. The phase is separated from the graphite by filtration and washing. Graphite is chemically inert and has good stability. It is insoluble in organic solvents and inorganic solvents, and does not react with lye; it has no reaction with many acids except for strong oxidizing acids such as nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, especially It is resistant to hydrofluoric acid; it does not react with water and steam at temperatures below 6000 °C. Therefore, the properties of graphite remain unchanged during the purification process.
The process of purifying graphite by alkaline acid method can be divided into two processes of alkali fusion and acid hydrolysis. The main chemical reactions of the alkali fusion process are as follows:
2NaOH + m SiO2 = Na2O·m S iO2 + H2O↑ (1)
2NaOH + Al2O3 = 2NaAlO2 + H2O↑ (2)
Fe3+ + 3OH- = Fe(OH)3↓ (3)
C a2+ + 2OH- = Ca(OH)2↓ (4)
Mg2+ + 2OH- = M g(OH)2↓ (5)
At a suitable temperature, Na2O·mSiO2 forms a low m-value water-soluble sodium silicate, and the reaction is washed with water for purification.
The alkali substance reacts with hydrochloric acid and reacts as follows:
Fe(OH)3 + 3HCl = FeCl3+ 3H2O (6)
Ca(OH)2 + 2HCl = C aCl2+ 2H2O (7)
Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl = MgCl2+ 2H2O (8)
N a2O·mSiO2 + HC l→ H2SiO3 +NaC l (9)
The alkali acid method can obtain a graphite product having a fixed carbon content of 99% or more. This method has been widely used in industry and has been transitioned from manual manual operation to a more advanced process using continuous melting of the melting furnace and V-groove. Melting process may be carried out in a tubular rotary furnace, a cast iron pan can also be carried out under manual agitation, but less secure. The melting temperature is 500~800 °C, and the reaction is about 1 h. The amount of alkali depends on the nature of the ore, generally 400~450 kg / t. The acid dosage is 450~500 kg / , and t is pickled at normal temperature.
A disadvantage of the alkaline acid method is that high temperature calcination is required, and energy consumption is large. The reaction time is long and the equipment is seriously corroded. In addition, from the current literature, the purity of the high-purity graphite is less than 99.9%.
1. 3 hydrofluoric acid method
Any silicate can be dissolved by hydrofluoric acid, a property that makes hydrofluoric acid a special agent for the treatment of poorly soluble minerals in graphite. Since 1979, the purification methods of gaseous hydrogen fluoride, liquid hydrofluoric acid system and ammonium fluoride salt system have been developed at home and abroad. Among them, the liquid hydrofluoric acid method is the most widely used. It uses the impurities in graphite to react with hydrofluoric acid. It is soluble in fluoride and volatiles to achieve purification. The main chemical reactions are as follows:
Na2O + 2HF = 2NaF + H2O (10)
K2O + 2HF = 2KF + H2O (11)
Al2O3 + 6HF = 2AlF3↓ + 3H2O (12)
SiO2 + 4HF = S iF4↓ + 2H2O (13)
However, hydrofluoric acid reacts with CaO, MgO, Fe2O3 and the like to precipitate. The response is as follows:
CaO + 2HF = C aF2↓ + H2O (14)
MgO + 2HF = MgF2↓+ H2O (15)
Fe2O3 + 6HF = 2FeF3↓ + 3H2O1 (16)
In order to solve the above precipitation problem, a small amount of fluorosilicic acid, dilute hydrochloric acid, nitric acid or sulfuric acid may be added to the hydrofluoric acid to remove interference of impurity elements such as Ca, Mg, and Fe. When fluorosilicic acid is present, its reaction is as follows:
CaF2 + H2SiF6= C aSiF6 + 2HF (17)
MgF2 + H2SiF6= MgSiF6 + 2HF (18)
2FeF3 + 3H2SiF6= Fe2 (SiF6)3 + 6HF (19)
When purifying by hydrofluoric acid method, graphite and a certain proportion of hydrofluoric acid are added together to the reactor with a stirrer after preheating. After sufficient wetting, the time is stirred, and the temperature of the reactor is controlled by a thermostat, after a specified time. The excess acid solution is removed in time, the filtrate is recycled, and the filter cake is washed with hot water until neutral, and then dehydrated and dried to obtain the product.
The hydrofluoric acid method is a relatively good purification scheme. It has been industrialized in the 1990s, and countries such as Europe and the United States are more common than in China. Because the method is highly corrosive to equipment and highly toxic, more than a decade ago, people used two steps of dilute acid and fluoride to remove impurities in graphite. 95%。 The patents of Japan, France and other countries have been described with ammonium hydrogen fluoride or ammonium fluoride and 93% carbon content of graphite powder, the fixed carbon content of graphite can be increased to 99.95%. In view of the enormous toxicity of hydrofluoric acid, the production process must have strict safety protection and wastewater treatment systems.
1. 4 chlorination roasting method
The chlorination roasting method is to add a certain amount of reducing agent to the graphite powder, calcine it at a certain temperature and a specific atmosphere, and then pass chlorine gas to carry out a chemical reaction, so that the valuable metal in the material is converted into a gas phase or a condensed phase having a lower melting point. The chlorides and complexes escape and are separated from the remaining components for the purpose of purifying the graphite.
The impurities in graphite are heated at high temperature and can be decomposed into simple oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, etc. under the action of reducing agents. These oxides have higher melting points, see Table 1, and their chlorine The melting point of the metal complex formed by the compound or other trivalent metal chlorides (such as CaFeCl4, NaAlCl4, KMgCl3, etc.) is lower, as shown in Table 2. The vaporization of these chlorides escapes, increasing the purity of the graphite.
The metal complex discharged in a gaseous state quickly becomes a condensed phase due to a decrease in temperature, and this characteristic can be used to carry out the treatment of the escaped exhaust gas.
Test procedure: Mixing graphite sample and a certain proportion of reducing agent coke into corundum tube, setting porcelain sieve plate and porcelain ball in the lower part of corundum tube to block the falling of graphite column, and sealing both ends of corundum tube without leaking . The corundum tube is placed in a furnace for heating, firstly introducing nitrogen gas to drive out the air in the tube to prevent oxidation of the graphite at high temperatures. When the set temperature is reached, the nitrogen gas is turned off and chlorine gas is introduced. The volatile chloride or complex formed by the chlorination reaction passes through the condensate bottle, is filtered, and is discharged into the atmosphere. After a certain period of time after the chlorination reaction, the chlorine gas is turned off, and then nitrogen gas is introduced to drive out the residual chlorine gas and the chloride gas.
The chlorination roasting method has the advantages of energy saving, high purification efficiency (> 98%), and high recovery rate. The toxicity, serious corrosiveness and serious environmental pollution of chlorine gas limit the promotion and application of the chlorination roasting process to a certain extent. Of course, this process is difficult to produce graphite of ultimate purity, and the process system is not stable enough, which also affects the application of the chlorination method in actual production. This method needs further improvement and improvement.
1. 5 high temperature purification method
Graphite is one of the most boiling substances in nature. It has a melting point of 3850±50°C and a boiling point of 4500 °C. The boiling point of silicate minerals is below 2750°C (the boiling point of quartz). The boiling point of graphite is much higher than the impurities. The boiling point of the silicate. This property is the theoretical basis for the purification of graphite by high temperature methods.
The graphite powder is directly charged into the graphite crucible, and heated to 2300 to 3000 ° C in a purification furnace which is supplied with an inert gas and a Freon protective gas for a certain period of time, and impurities in the graphite may overflow, thereby purifying the graphite. The high-temperature method generally uses high-carbon graphite containing 99% or more of carbon which has been purified by flotation or chemical purification as a raw material, and the graphite can be purified to 99.99%. For example, by further improving the process conditions, the quality of the crucible can be improved, and the purity can be achieved. 99. 995% or more.
The high-temperature method can produce more than 99.99% of ultra-high-purity graphite, but requires more than 99% of the fixed carbon of the raw materials, and the equipment is expensive, the investment is huge, the production scale is limited, the electric furnace heating technology is strict, and the air needs to be isolated. Otherwise, the graphite begins to be oxidized when it is heated to 450 ° C in hot air. The higher the temperature, the greater the loss of graphite. Only in special industries (such as national defense, aerospace, etc.) where the quality of graphite is very high, high-purity graphite is produced in small batches by high-temperature method.
2 Advantages and disadvantages of graphite purification method
The flotation method is one of the lowest energy consumption and reagent consumption and the lowest cost in the conventional purification method of minerals. This is the biggest advantage of the flotation method for purifying graphite. However, the use of flotation to purify graphite can only achieve a limited increase in the grade of graphite. For scaly graphite, the use of multi-stage grinding can not only dissociate its completely monomer, but also is not conducive to the protection of large scales of graphite. Therefore, it is neither economical nor scientific to further improve the graphite grade by flotation. To obtain high carbon graphite with more than 99% carbon, chemically purified graphite must be used.
(1) Alkali acid purification method. The graphite containing carbon purified by alkaline acid method can reach more than 99%, and has the characteristics of less one-time investment, higher product grade and strong process adaptability. Moreover, it has the advantages of conventional equipment and versatility (except for graphite, many non-metallic minerals can be purified by alkaline acid method). Alkaline acid method is the most widely used method in China today; its disadvantage is energy consumption. Long reaction time, large loss of graphite and serious pollution of wastewater.
(2) Hydrofluoric acid method. The main advantage of the hydrofluoric acid method is high impurity removal efficiency, high product quality, low impact on the performance of graphite products, and low energy consumption. The disadvantage is that the hydrofluoric acid is highly toxic and highly corrosive. Strict safety protection measures must be taken during the production process. The strict requirements for the equipment also lead to an increase in cost. In addition, the wastewater produced by the hydrofluoric acid method is very toxic and corrosive. Strong, it needs to be strictly treated before it can be discharged, and environmental protection investment also greatly reduces the cost of the hydrofluoric acid method.
(3) Chlorination roasting method. The low calcination temperature and the small chlorine consumption of the chlorination roasting method greatly reduce the production cost of graphite, and the carbon content of the graphite product is comparable to that after the treatment with the hydrofluoric acid method. The recovery rate of the calcination method is high. However, chlorine gas is toxic, highly corrosive, requires high equipment operation, requires strict sealing, and must be properly disposed of, so it has limited its promotion and application to a certain extent.
(4) The biggest advantage of the high temperature method is that the carbon content of the product is extremely high, up to 99.995% or more. The disadvantage is that it must be specially designed to build high temperature.
Furnace, expensive equipment, one-time investment, in addition, high energy consumption, high electricity costs increase production costs. Moreover, the harsh production conditions also make the application range of this method extremely limited. Only in the case of national defense, aerospace and other special requirements for the purity of graphite products, this method is considered to carry out small-scale production of graphite, and industrialization cannot be realized. Comparative analysis shows that several methods of graphite purification have their own advantages and have certain defects. The alkali acid method is easy to operate, the production cost is low, and the production conditions are also low. However, the graphite produced has a low fixed carbon content, which is currently unable to reach 99.9%. The hydrofluoric acid method has a good effect of removing impurities, and the fixed carbon content of the product is high, but the hydrofluoric acid is highly toxic and highly corrosive, and the safety protection measures and production conditions are strict, and the wastewater is not easy to handle. Chlorination roasting is also required to be tightly sealed due to the toxic and corrosive nature of chlorine. The high-temperature method can produce very high-grade high-purity graphite, but it cannot be promoted because of its own limitations, and it is only applied in a small range.
3 Research progress and application of purification methods
3. 1 flotation
The scale graphite flotation process is generally a closed-circuit process of multi-stage grinding, multi-stage sorting, and medium-mine order (or centralized) return. There are three forms of multi-stage processes, namely, re-grinding of concentrates, re-grinding of mines, and re-grinding of tailings. Crystalline graphite is mostly used in the re-grinding process of concentrates. Under normal circumstances, the recovery rate of mineral processing operations can reach about 80%. Some mines have also tried the re-grinding process in the mine, but the effect is not obvious. Some small factories also use open or semi-open flotation processes. Due to excessive disposal of tailings, the ore recovery rate is very low, generally only 40% to 50%.
At present, some units are still conducting research on new microcrystalline graphite flotation processes (such as oil agglomeration flotation). However, due to the poor selectivity of this type of graphite ore, the treatment by physical beneficiation method is not good, and the concentrate grade is not high enough. The recovery rate is also very low.
Mines that produce graphite by flotation have:
(1) Mountain Southeast Villa Graphite Mine. The mine is located in Laixi County, Shandong Province, producing flake graphite. The ore processing capacity of the ore dressing is about 350,000 t / a, the original ore size is -450 mm, the grinding grain size is - 15 mm, and the selected grain size is -0.15 mm, accounting for 60% to 65%. 6%至0. 8%。 The original ore grade 4. 39% ~ 4. 45%, concentrate grade 88% ~ 89%, the recovery rate of about 80%, tailings grade 0. 6% ~ 0. 8%. The flotation concentrate is purified by alkali acid method, and the final graphite concentrate grade is 98%~99%, and the operation recovery rate is 88%.
(2) Inner Mongolia Xinghe Graphite Mine. The two plants have an annual processing capacity of about 300,000 ore, and the output of graphite is about 7,000 tons. The original ore size is -350mm, the grinding particle size is -10 mm, and the selected particle size is -0.15 mm, accounting for 38%. The ore grade is 3.82%~4. 07%, the concentrate grade is about 88%, the tailings grade is 1.34%~1.68%, and the recovery rate is about 68%. The grade of chemical purification of flotation concentrate can reach 94%~99.5%.
(3) Heilongjiang Liumao graphite mine. The mine produces flake graphite. The ore size is - 550mm, the grinding grain size is - 20 mm, the selected grain size is -100 mesh, 70%, the ore grade is 14% ~ 16%, and the graphite coarse concentrate after flotation is re-grinded 5 times, 6 times. The selected and medium-concentrated concentrates are returned to the rough grinding circuit, and the refined ore grade is 93% ~ 95%, the tailings grade is 3% ~ 4%, and the ore recovery rate is about 75%.
(4) Hunan Lutang graphite mine. The mine produces cryptocrystalline graphite. The original ore grade is 65%~68%, the particle size is -250 mm, and it is fine-grained. The processing flow is relatively simple, and is mainly composed of processes such as hand selection, coarse crushing, screening, medium crushing, drying, grinding, and classification. The ore processing capacity of the ore dressing plant is about 60,000 t/d, and the grinding grain size is -40 mm. The hand-selected concentrate grade is 70%~88%, the hand-selected tailings grade is less than 60%, and the ore dressing recovery rate is 90%.
3. 2 alkaline acid method
Tang Xingming, a scientific research institute of Panzhihua Refractory Company, used high-purity graphite with a grade of 99.5% to 99.79% by using an alkali acid purification method. Studies have shown that, in the firing process alkali adding an amount of sodium metaborate or boric acid as an additive, synergistic decomposition with sodium hydroxide in the ash graphite, both fluxing, but also lowering the reaction temperature, the substance is soluble in water, The excess is drained with the waste water during filtration. Li Changqing of Beijing University of Chemical Technology used medium carbon graphite as raw material. This method was used (boric acid or sodium metaborate was added as a flux in the alkali fusion process, and a certain concentration of hydrofluoric acid was used in the acid hydrolysis process), which was 99.82% high. Pure graphite.
3. 3 hydrofluoric acid method
Zheng Mingdong proposed that when there is hydrochloric acid or dilute nitric acid, the solubility of the poorly soluble fluoride is greatly increased, which can play a role similar to that of fluorosilicic acid. He uses the hydrofluoric acid purification method to treat the high-purity graphite fixed carbon obtained from the Panzhihua scale graphite. The content can reach 99.95%.

Qingdao Graphite Co., Ltd. has established the first automatic production line with an annual output of 500 tons of high-purity graphite by using the mixed acid system of hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, and opened the first domestic large-scale production of high-purity graphite.
The 9% of the fixed carbon content of the graphite is increased by the reaction of the ammonium carbonate or ammonium fluoride with the graphite powder having a carbon content of 93%. The general procedure of this method: graphite + NH4HF2y mixed y (heating) reaction y cooling y solid-liquid separation y (addition of NaHCO3) reaction y washing y (plus H2SO4) reaction y washing y dehydration y dry y packaging y product.
Some scholars in China have conducted related research. Under normal pressure, graphite and difluoride (such as NH4HF2) are mixed in a certain ratio, heated to about 125 °C (up to about 140 °C), then cooled, washed, and other salts are removed. . After washing with a certain concentration of boiling soda water to remove residual fluorine, graphite with high purity can be obtained.
3. 4 chlorination roasting method
The sulphate concentrate is purified by a chlorination method at a temperature of 1000 ° C and a temperature of 1100 ° C.
3. 5 high temperature method
Zhang Xiangjun and other high-carbon graphite having a carbon content of 99% or more purified by the "flotation method" and the "alkali acid method" is used as a raw material, and the graphite is purified by a high-temperature method to obtain 99.995% or more of high-purity graphite.
Due to the shortcomings of the high temperature method itself, the application range of this method is extremely limited, and industrialization cannot be realized.
4 Conclusion
A large number of research and production practices have shown that in many methods for purifying graphite, although there are advantages and disadvantages, the alkali acid method is simple in production process, loose in production environment, low in production cost, no toxic and hazardous waste, and conventional waste. The liquid handling is easier and more advantageous. After solving the problems of shortening the roasting and leaching time, improving the purification effect, and properly solving the wastewater treatment, the alkali acid method will be the best method for purifying graphite in industrial production.
